A Peek at Batik

My batik jewelry is one of my newest designs. Most pieces include sterling silver, and sometimes I add a few trade beads!  It’s a slow process but I love the flexibility of adding lots of color to a design with the fabric. Batik also adds a different texture to the designs.

I learned to batik in a high school art class and am now revisiting the process for my jewelry. Batik is an ancient technique involving wax resist and dye on fabric. My batik process starts with white cotton fabric on which I create designs with hot wax. Next I choose a color to dye the fabric. I then cut the shapes I want to incorporate into the jewelry design and seal the fabric to hold it’s shape.

Incorporating batiks into my designs adds another element of planning. I have several small fabric cuts where I either changed my mind about the design or cut the fabric too small. I trust my spares will find a place in a design some day!

Thanks for stopping by.
